FOMIH Media Release - 20th May 2003

The Phoenix rises... watch this space!

The Manchester Phoenix Ice Hockey Club will embark upon its inaugural season this coming September as one of the founder members of the Elite Ice Hockey League.

The new club name was chosen via a poll held on the FOMIH web site with Phoenix attracting a massive majority of the votes cast by the hockey fans around the region. Together with the Internet poll, FOMIH also received many postal nominations and telephone votes again with Phoenix the most popular name.

The Manchester Phoenix will play in red, white and black and sporting an exciting new logo. The logo will be unveiled initially via the FOMIH website at and will also appear at the official website of the club. A public launch of Phoenix merchandise and a 'meet the coach' event are being planned.

A beaming Neil Morris, Managing Director of the Manchester Phoenix, commented, "it's with enormous pride that we today name the team and we say an enormous 'thank-you' to the hundreds of fans who cast their votes. Phoenix was the overwhelming winner and we are confident that the logo design commissioned will be readily accepted and embraced by the fans who have supported FOMIH as we've built towards this moment."

Mr Morris continued, "We are proud to be part of an exciting new era in British ice hockey with the Elite League and look forward to confirming the name of our head coach very shortly. We had six quality applicants and the process of choosing the right person to lead our team has not been easy. However, with the new league, our ice time arrangement with SMG, team name and colours, we are confident that the coaching announcement will further energise the fans that ice hockey in Manchester is back - arisen like a Phoenix... watch this space!!"
